Name: Dr. Fatima Shirin

Designation: Scientist - G

Education Qualification: M.Sc. (Forestry), Ph.D. (Forestry)

Name of Division/ Section: Genetics and Tree Improvement

Areas of Specialization:Forestry, Tree Improvement, Plant Tissue Culture...                                  and Clonal Forestry

Research Interest:Forestry, Forest Genetics, Plant Tissue Culture, Tree Improvement... .                                and Clonal Forestry

Highlight/Achievements of the Research:

  • Developed protocols for in vitro clonal propagation of bamboos (B. vulgaris, Bambusa nutans), tree species (teak, chandramul, sita ashoka, rosewood) and medicinal plants.
  • Using micro propagation and macro propagation techniques, Bambusa nutans, Bambusa tulda, B. vulgaris var. green and Bambusa balcooa were multiplied and plants were produced. The plants were distributed/sold to different end users, viz., State Forest Departments, Universities, Research Institutes and Farmers etc.
  • Non-exclusive license agreement was signed with commercial tissue culture laboratory for mass multiplication of tissue culture raised teak clones and bamboo Candidate plus clumps.
  • Cleft grafting was standardized in  Madhuca longifolia (mahua) using scions collected from Candidate Plus Trees  and grafted quality planting material was produced.
  • Clonal trial/Vegetative multiplication garden was established at two locations using grafted plants of Madhuca longifolia (mahua).
  • Tissue culture raised plants of teak were planted as clonal trails at 15 locations in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
  • Species trail with Candidate Plus Clumps of four species of bamboo, viz., Bambusa vulgaris var. green, B. tulda, B. nutans and B. balcooa was established in three states of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.
  • Four progeny trials and one clonal trial of Gmelina arboreawas established in three states of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.
  • Field gene Bank of 5 FGR species, viz., Buchnania lanzan, Miyragyna parvifolia, Litsea glutinosa, Careya arborea and Haldinia arborea was established.
  • Germplasm of Celastrus paniculatus and Plumbago zeylanica was collected from different locations in Chhattisgarh and planting material was produced through cuttings.
  • Bamboo plants were planted in different villages (Naugaja, Chingrola, Bharhut) of Umaria, MP in farmer’s field in consultation with Orient Paper Mill, Amlai, MP. Field trial was established at TFRI, Jabalpur with the objective of comparing the performance of two superior clumps (genotypes) of six different bamboo species (B. bambos, B. balcooa, B. tulda, B. nutans, B. vulgaris var. green and D. strictus).
  • From the  four central Indian states 197 CPTs of Dalbergia latifolia  were located.  Largest number of CPTs were found in Allapalli Range (Chandrapur Forest Division) in Maharashtra followed by Tamia Range (Chhindwara Forest Division) in Madhya Pradesh.Maximum somatic embryo formation was obtained on 0.5 mg l-1 2, 4-D (56%) during somatic embryogenesis through immature embryos collected 90 days after flowering.
  • 48 CPTs of Gmelina arborea from 11 different locations in Madhya Pradesh were selected. Rooting of semi-hardwood cuttings was achieved and a vegetative multiplication garden from selected trees was established.
  • 460 CPTs of Madhuca longifoliawere selected from Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and MP.Flowers were collected from them and sugar content was estimated.  Morpho-metric data was recorded for flowers and fruits of all the selected trees.
  • Bambusetum was established with 65 bamboo species at TFRI, Jabalpur.
  • In the assigned Agroclimatic zone 8, 30 phenotypically superior trees of Azadirachta indica were selected and complete morpho-metric data was recorded. Seeds were collected for quantification of seed oil.
  • Variation with respect to azadirachtin content was studied in 10 different populations of Azadirachta indica (neem).
